Each of the compositions presented here was sculpted by Charles Rice Goff III from a collection of recordings of untreated guitar improvisations by Federico Barabino. Barabino calls his recordings: "Expresiones." At the outset of this artistic interaction, Barabino explained to Goff that he was offering his Expresiones to several collaborators in the hope of realizing a variety of results. In response, Goff created seven pieces that each employs a different compositional technique, aiming not only to provide a unique contribution to Barabino’s project, but to provide a collection of unique contributions. The results, presented here, are seven Metamorfs.
Goff rearranged Barabino’s Expresiones in various ways to create the Metamorfs. Portions of the recordings were cut up, some were overdubbed together, some were treated with sound effects, some were run through a looping digital mixer, some were converted into midi files, and some were even recorded onto cassette tapes and then recorded again while the tape players spun around on a phonographic turntable.
Goff also blended Barabino’s recordings with a variety of sounds, including noises made by IZ toys that had been given away at McDonald's restaurants, computer generated voices, recordings of American children rapping the words to a Spanish nutritional pamphlet, a Barbie violin, a PVC pipe saxophone, a midi saxophone synthesizer, several percussion toys, a computer midi synthesizer, and Goff’s own voice and lyrics.
Also included in this collection is a video entitled "East Kansas Lightning." Goff filmed and edited the visual elements; the soundtrack is an out take piece from Goff's manipulations of Barabino's Expresiones.
